Professor Dr. Saad Rana (Late)

Professor Dr Saad Rana’s interest in reproduction and fertility management is from the early times of his professional career. He established the first fertility clinic in Pakistan at Lady Willingdon Hospital in 1977 when the concept of specialized clinics was unknown and non-existent in the country.

Professor Dr Saad Rana has the highest international qualifications and vast experience in Gynecology, Obstetrics and Reproduction. He taught the subject for over 25 years and served as professor of obstetrics and gynecology as head of the department at Rawalpindi Medical College and allied teaching hospitals (Holy Family DHQ Hospitals), and at King Edward Medical College and allied teaching hospitals (Lady Willingdon & Lady Aitchison hospitals) at Lahore. Revolutionary advancements took place in the last 4 decades of 20th century which completely changed the practice of Gynecology and Reproduction.

Professor Saad Rana was actively involved as pioneer in these advancements and is credited with their introduction in Pakistan. Whether it was Ultrasound in Gynecology, Obstetrics and Reproduction, Prenatal Fetal Monitoring and other techniques of Fetal Surveillance, Monitoring Labor, Assisted Reproductive Technologies or Gynecological Endoscopy, his name was at the top as their pioneer in Pakistan. He had also organized congresses and workshops where world authorities participated. He was the founder president of Ultrasound Society of Pakistan, Pakistan Society of Perinatology and Pakistan Society of Hysteroscopy. He started “Pakistan Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology” which led the developments and research in obstetrics, gynecology and related fields in Pakistan.

Besides many research papers, he is the author of a prestigious book, “Obstetrics and Perinatal Care for Developing Countries” which is acknowledged as one of the most comprehensive and best books on the subject. He organized the first ever workshop on IVF in 1986 at the twin cities of Islamabad/Rawalpindi with Dr Kamal Ahuja of Cromwell IVF center London thus paved the way to the introduction of IVF technology in Pakistan.
